In this series you can master 511 Chinese characters that will form a strong foundation for learning written Chinese. The selection of characters strikes a balance between the most common characters and the most useful ones, with a focus on characters necessary for reading journals, essays, and newspaper articles. The characters are chosen based on their relevance to society, art culture, science and technology, business and economics, politics, military affairs, the environment, and other current issues of international importance.

The 2700 characters in the three Chinese Characters series (Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced) collectively represent over 98% of the characters used in written form in newspapers and other journalistic essays.
